An Omaha Landmark
Rising 30 stories and 478 feet above the city streets, the WoodmenLife Tower has served as a focal point of the Omaha skyline and part of the city’s downtown business district for more than 50 years.
WoodmenLife Tower History
WoodmenLife grew quickly in the 1950s and ‘60s, and by 1965, it was clear that the organization needed a headquarters larger than the eight-story Insurance Building that had served as Home Office since 1934.
Construction on the new WoodmenLife Tower began in 1966, and for the next three years, Omaha residents watched in amazement as the 30-story structure took shape. More than 8,000 tons of steel beams, girders and columns were used in the construction, along with nearly 16,000 cubic yards of concrete – enough to build a standard three-foot wide sidewalk 81 miles in length.
The WoodmenLife Tower was officially dedicated June 6, 1969, on the 79th anniversary of the organization’s founding. As part of the dedication ceremony, a time capsule was placed below the lobby floor containing memorabilia and a special set of 1969 U.S. coins. The capsule will be opened in 2040.
In the years since its construction, the WoodmenLife Tower’s decor, mechanical and safety systems have been completely updated, including the installation of sprinkler systems to meet the city’s high-rise building code. A multi-level parking structure, Tower Park, was built in 1986 for tenants and visitors. A second facility, Woodmen Park, was built in 1993 for the parking needs of the WoodmenLife Tower’s tenants.
